At the last Faculty Senate meeting, Incentives Committee (ad hoc)
brought forth a proposal for a UTC policy for providing incentives for
faculty and staff to bring in outside funds to support our work here at
UTC, over and above our normal duties. All of us have our normal
duties, either stated formally or understood. For faculty, these
include teaching, advising, committee work, service and scholarship.
The Incentives Committee proposes to allow those of us who bring in
outside (non State and non tuition) funds to have a clear policy of
receiving rewards for bringing in that money.

We have developed a policy that is crafted for UTC. Here are some
aspects of the proposal:
--it provides a form of performance bonus for bringing in released-time
support
--it provides guidelines for extra service pay in addition to normal
duties
--it provides guidelines for extra service pay during the summer and
non-paid days in the academic year

The provisions were developed to
--be similar to other UT unit policies
--be similar to other Tennessee universities
--be similar to policies at schools outside of Tennessee
--be permissable under some Federal programs
--be a continuation of what has been done in the past at UTC

The full policy is available at
http://www.utc.edu/Faculty/Jim-Henry/fi/policy.htm

An example situation for applying the policy is at

The PowerPoint slides that were used for the previous Faculty Senate
meeting are at

At the next meeting, we will ask that the tabled motion from last
Faculty Senate meeting be brought off the table.

The committee is continuing to work on this proposal and
will welcome input or questions from you by e-mail or phone.

Cordially,
JIM
