I'm glad to see such a discusion on Open-ness and HP3000.
I find it amusing when people say the Hp3000 is old technology, Unix
was developed in the sixties at Berkley, some say to only notable
things to come from Berkley in the 60's was Unix and LSD.
Another strange but true fact.....the UNI in Unix stands for one, yep
you guessed it, Unix was originaly designed to be a single user OS.
The proprietry thing is curious too, I've heard customers say they
want open systems, and then buy NT and Oracle, I mean, how proprietry
can you get. If you want true open systems, develop in pure C or
Cobol, but that takes too long I hear you say, you cant have your
cake and eat it...........

Its true HP does not promote HP3000 the way it does Unix and NT, but
you must remember that these are both fast growth markets where you
can still sell 'Tin' and Operating Systems'. The HP3000, like the
AS400 and the Vax, are all 'solution sell' systems, that means you
sell systems by providing a solution. A large number of Unix and NT
systems are bought because the customer wants Unix or NT, and will
find the solution later. I am absolutely certain if HP spent as much
time and money promoting HP3000 as they did promoting NT and Unix,
they would only see a fraction of the return.

HP3000 outdated, rubbish, it will still run the hind legs of any
other operating system without getting out of breath....to say
nothing of reliability that other only dream of.
