It sure would be nice if there was a way to interrogate the typeahead
buffer to see if there was anything in it, which would at least be a
workaround for this problem.

I suspect that at least for telnet (and perhaps VT?) sessions the typeahead
buffer must exist on the 3000 rather than on the client or in a DTC, so
perhaps this might be possible?
