Are they MRS tapes (MRS logo... the parallel vertical hash marks on the
shell)?

If not, there's a switch on the bottom of the drive which enables writing
to non-MRS tapes.  Search the 3000-L archives for the past few years nd
there should have been a few messages telling you which switches to set.
